If you leave an university not completing a degree, for personal reasons, will it work against you?

I mean, hypothetically, if John Doe left halfway during his masters course for personal reasons, would it work against him if he tried to do another masters course in a different university 20 years later, in a different subject, let us say. I'm talking about his academic record.

  1. lots of people leave and come back this sort of thing happens all the time
  2. They might not accept you over another student. It takes a great deal of money and time to put a masters student through. If you are going to potentially wimp out, they don' want that. I did the same thing and I got the third degree about it when I applied to another program.
  3. An academic record, in and of itself, is meaningless. If John Doe tried to get into a master's program 20 years finishing undergrad, he'd have a much harder time getting accepted and doing the work.
  4. Lots of people do leave and come back, but if John Doe wanted to go back sometime later, it would help if he had letters from university doctors or officials from the time of the first program, which confirmed that there were extenuating circumstances which led to the program not being completed.
  5. You don't have to tell the next school about it if you don't want to. How would they know?
  6. No. The only problem you may have is whether or not any of your courses will transfer into the new degree program. Most schools will accept 6 credits, and one or two may accept 9 credits, if they are not too old. In your hypothetical question--20 years is too long. People who deal with students all the time understand that sometimes life happens and a person may not finish his or her degree program. The fact that you would want to start again is a good thing. You will be more mature, have life experiences, and have realized the value of a graduate degree. It is not a negative thing, except for the loss of credits. Do the best you can and if you need to take a break, just do not give up on your dream.
  7. no it will not work against him. my father left his masters program with only 2 classes remaining because i was born and they needed money. he was close enough that a company hired him anyway and he is now his own business owner and happy and wealthy as can be. just finish your degree. i have my masters in geography and i thought i would have to kill myself to get it done, but after the lonnnnng hours of thesis re-writing and re-writing, it is done and i have a pretty diploma to prove it. the sense of satisfaction is wonderful! just do it!
