It is only 'normal' in the sense that most people in the world get involved in such a thing, but that doesn't really happen. However, it doesn't make it 'bad' (that is only a judgement brought up by people who fear what they don't know or understand) because it would be very boring if we were all the same. What I would say is go for it, because it is something that you really want to do, and it would make you feel good.
