How can I combine a full-time job and the preparation for applying to at least 12 universities for a master?

I have about one month time to complete all the pre-application procedures(recommendation letters, personal essay, taking the GRE test etc.)

  1. Honestly, why apply to 12 schools? The fees are generally higher at this level, the applications can be quite time consuming, and you're going to have to pay extra to have GRE scores sent to that many schools. Since GREs are already expensive, you're talking a lot of money. I applied to two schools. Most people I know applied to no more than three or four. Just something to think about... Now, as to application materials... As long as you're applying to programs in the same concentration, you can write one statement of purpose (essay). You'll probably want to tweak it a bit (say how going to that particular school will help you get to your goals), but you won't need to write a completely different one for each school. You can probably rework your essay for different concentrations without too much trouble as well. I tried not to ask people to write more than one letter of recommendation. However, if you're doing multiple schools you should probably try not to ask people to write more than two. You're asking for a favor, so the point is to be polite about it and not ask a busy person to write a ton of these. If you've done volunteer work or had a job in the field you're applying for, your boss is also a good person to ask. They don't all have to be profs. Some people will ask for additional information before they write your recommendation. I had a couple of people ask to see my statement of purpose and/or resume before they wrote the recommendation. So, ask people really soon so that they have time to do a good job. If the school has a form, get that to them right away. Do give them envelopes with postage already on it. Even when its being mailed from the university, its a nice touch. Make sure that they know when the deadline is. GRE prep depends on how you are with standardized tests. If you tend to be good at them, you may want to just do the practice test cd that they send you. If you have trouble with this type of test, I'd at least buy a book and you might want to take a class. I'm assuming that you've already registered. If not, you must do that right now. They're usually booked at least a month out, especially this time of year. You're also applying for assistantships? Some of this overlaps with application materials. There are usually recommendations, statements of purpose, essays on your work experience and education thus far... You will need to check on this, but at my grad school the assistantship application deadline was later than the admission application deadline, which would give you some leeway on getting this all done right now. Good Luck!
