Excited or Submissive Pee from my yr old dog?

I got my mini doxie when she was about 4mos old. She'll be a year old in about a week. She has done great with house breaking, the only thing I can't seem to break her of is excited peeing. It never fails, every single time my boyfriend comes over and he greets her she pees, even if she just came from outside. Sometimes when I play with her she'll do it. Does anybody have any suggestions?! I thought at least by now all this "excitement" would be done with. Please help!

  1. Yes!! It is excitement .. my dog does the same and we asked and it is from excitement !!.. he always pees on my sons leg when he comes in (2 yr old poddle)
  2. i have a mini doxie as well and when we come in she does the same thing but we run to the back door or we let her come outside when she greets us and it works all the time. tell your boyfriend to go outside to greet her let her come to him. it works beleive me
  3. Luckily this one should be fairly easy. Stop greeting the dog. Every time you come home, or your boyfriend comes home, no one greet the dog. Ignore the dog as long as it takes for the dog not to associate you coming home with attention. It could be an hour, who knows. The same goes for when you leave the house. Don't appologize or "say goodbye", as all you're doing is telling the dog that you leaving is a big deal. Ignore the dog. It doesn't need you to fuss over it, since the result is this urination. This doesn't mean you can't love your dog and give it affection, just don't do it when you come home or leave the house. If the dog continues to pee when you come home for a while without you giving attention, either put it outside, or leave that area of the house. I house-sat for a woman with a Husky cross that submissively peed when people came home, and that's a big puddle! All i did was enter the house, kick off my shoes, and go immediately upstairs without evenl ooking at the dog. She'd stay downstairs and quiver while I changed and cleaned up, and by the time I came downstairs she'd calmed down enough that she wouldn't pee. She'd still flip on her back as soon as I was in sight, but I just ignored her until she was normal again. And you know what? She never peed once as long as I used that approach.
  4. I had this problem and am happy to tell you it can be fixed. I read about this in some vet textbooks at work. Anyway, when your boyfriend comes over, tell him when he walks in, do NOT make eye contact or bend over to greet her. Let him sit down and make the dog come to him. In other words act like he is kind of ignoring her. My dog did this everytime I went towards her when i first got her, so I quit doing everything that caused her to do this. I did not look at her in the eye when i first came home or crouch down to pet her. I did the reverse. It took a couple of months but she has stopped the behavior. Only on a few RARE occasions has she done it and she was scared at the time. It will work if you stick with it and be patient. good luck
